The Newman Guide - Acknowledgements

This edition of The Newman Guide builds in substantial ways off of the inaugural edition published on All Saints Day in 2007. The first edition was researched and written by Joseph Esposito and Evangeline Jones, who served as the Director and Deputy Director of The Cardinal Newman Society’s Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education until April 2009.  This edition relies substantially on their additional research, updates, additions and editorial contributions.

Significant additions were made by Cardinal Newman Society President Patrick Reilly and Executive Vice President Thomas Mead, and they made the final editorial judgements. Mr. Mead was also responsible for layout and design.

We are very thankful for the contribution of the foreword from Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., and essays from Father C. John McCloskey III, Dr. Peter Kreeft, Eileen Cubanski, Phil Lenahan and Kathryn Lopez. We also thank Our Sunday Visitor for the rights to incorporate portions of Mr. Lenahan’s published work.

We are also grateful for the assistance of The Cardinal Newman Society’s Adam Wilson, David Costanzo and Karen Spiering for their work fact checking, copy editing and researching material for the college profiles. Mr. Costanzo is also responsible for managing outreach to parents and students through TheNewmanGuide.com.

We are indebted to the many individuals who offered insights into the colleges through interviews. These include staff, faculty, students and alumni. College representatives were very gracious in providing photographs, checking facts and in other ways helping us better understand the finer points of their institutions. Many members of The Cardinal Newman Society also volunteered helpful information.

Further, this Guide would not have been possible without the very substantial generosity of donors to The Cardinal Newman Society. Although they are too numerous to identify by name, please know that we realize that without their support none of this work would be possible.

Finally, we recognize that to the extent that The Newman Guide contributes to the renewal of Catholic higher education it is owed soley to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Errors or ommissions, if any, are the responsibility of the editors and will be corrected in the online edition of this publication at TheNewmanGuide.com.

Acknowledgments

Although the colleges recommended in The Newman Guide are examples of faithful Catholic colleges, the editors do not intend to suggest that other institutions are not fully Catholic as recognized under the authority of the Catholic bishops. Nevertheless, it is apparent that there is a genuine crisis on many other Catholic campuses. We ask that readers pray for the work of Pope Benedict and our bishops to renew Catholic higher education through the intercession of our patron John Henry Cardinal Newman.

About The Cardinal Newman Society

Founded in 1993, The Cardinal Newman Society is dedicated to renewing and strengthening Catholic identity at Catholic colleges and universities. The Society focuses its work on assisting students, school officials and alumni; urging fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church; and researching activities both on campus and in the classroom. The Society is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, nonprofit organization supported by more than 20,000 individuals. More than 367,000 individuals signed its 2009 petition concerning the Notre Dame commencement scandal.

In addition to publishing The Newman Guide, the Society houses The Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education which provides research and analysis on strengthening Catholic higher education. The Society promotes Catholic values on life and sexual ethics on campuses through its Love & Responsibility Program and also operates a Campus Speaker Monitoring Project to support the guidelines the U.S. bishops have established to prohibit Catholic institutions from giving opponents of Catholic teachings honors or platforms for their views. Additionally, the Society promotes Eucharistic Adoration and is the national coordinator for the display of the Vatican’s International Exposition The Eucharistic Miracles of the World on college campuses.
